Atlanta, GA – The first widespread frost and freeze of the season is expected to arrive early next week across much of north and central Georgia, according to the U.S. National Weather Service in Peachtree City.

A strong push of cold air will move into the region Monday night, with temperatures dropping sharply into the mid-20s to low-30s by early Tuesday morning. “Confidence is high that the first widespread frost/freeze of the season will occur,” forecasters said early Thursday.

Cities such as Athens, Rome, Gainesville, and Columbus are all expected to experience freezing or sub-freezing conditions, marking the coldest air mass of the season so far. Forecasters note that Tuesday morning could be the coldest of the stretch, with frost likely lingering into Wednesday in some sheltered areas.

Residents are advised to protect outdoor plants and exposed pipes, and pet owners should ensure animals have warm shelter.

Temperatures are expected to gradually rebound midweek, but mornings will remain chilly through Thursday.
