Atlanta, Ga. – Thunderstorms are expected to intensify across Georgia Saturday, bringing the potential for damaging wind gusts and hail through late evening. Drivers and outdoor eventgoers should prepare for sudden changes in weather, including frequent lightning and localized downpours.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, scattered storms are developing along a cold front as it sweeps across northern and west-central parts of the state. The strongest systems could deliver wind gusts between 40 and 50 mph along with small hail. Forecasters expect storm activity to spread eastward into the evening hours, with risks lasting until around 10 p.m.
Metro Atlanta and nearby communities such as Marietta, Gainesville, and Athens are under the greatest risk for severe weather. Frequent lightning strikes may disrupt outdoor gatherings and sporting events, while sudden bursts of wind could down tree limbs and power lines. Motorists are urged to avoid driving through flooded roadways and to allow extra travel time.
Emergency officials advise residents to secure loose outdoor items, charge cell phones in case of outages, and remain indoors when thunder is heard.
Storms are likely to diminish overnight as the cold front clears the region, but the National Weather Service cautions additional alerts may be issued if conditions worsen.
