Atlanta, Georgia – Spring break travelers heading across Georgia could wake up to near-freezing temperatures around 34°F between March 16 and March 20, bringing a rare late-season chill to parts of the Southeast just days before the official start of spring.
According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), a broad stretch of the eastern United States—from Minnesota down to East Texas and east to the Atlantic coast—shows a 60–70% probability of below-normal temperatures during that period. Georgia sits along the southern edge of this colder air mass.
Cities including Atlanta, Athens, and Macon could see overnight temperatures falling to around 34°F, especially during clear nights when winds weaken and temperatures cool quickly before sunrise.
Daytime highs are expected to recover into the 50s and lower 60s, but those readings will still run below typical mid-March averages.
Drivers traveling along major routes including Interstate 75, Interstate 85, and Interstate 20 during spring break should watch for patchy frost forming on bridges and elevated roadways during early morning hours, particularly in rural areas where temperatures can briefly dip closer to freezing.
Along the coast, Savannah and Brunswick may remain slightly milder due to the Atlantic influence, though chilly mornings could still greet travelers heading to coastal spring break destinations.
The colder pattern may persist through March 20, and additional advisories could follow if overnight temperatures continue hovering near the freezing mark across Georgia during the opening week of spring.
