Atlanta, Georgia – A significant winter weather threat is setting up across much of Georgia, with snow, icy roads, and dangerously cold wind chills expected to develop Friday evening and persist through Sunday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, a Winter Storm Watch remains in effect for a large portion of north, central, and east-central Georgia. Snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are possible across northeast and east-central parts of the state, while areas farther west and south, including the Atlanta metro, could see up to 2 inches with locally higher amounts. Wind gusts may reach 35 mph, worsening travel conditions and increasing exposure risks.
Counties from the North Georgia mountains through Athens, Gainesville, and Greensboro are most likely to see higher snow totals, while metro Atlanta, including Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb, Gwinnett, and Clayton counties, faces the risk of slick bridges and rapidly deteriorating roads Friday night into Saturday. Rural routes and elevated surfaces are expected to become hazardous first.
In addition to snow, the cold may be just as dangerous. Wind chills are expected to drop below zero in parts of north Georgia Saturday and Saturday night, with single-digit wind chills possible as far south as central Georgia. Officials urge residents to stay indoors when possible, dress in layers if venturing outside, and delay travel unless absolutely necessary.
The storm watch signals increasing confidence in winter impacts, and additional advisories or warnings could be issued as the weekend approaches.
