Rome, Georgia – Evening travel across northwest Georgia could quickly turn hazardous as strong thunderstorms push into the region, prompting a Severe Thunderstorm Watch through 10 p.m. Monday.
According to the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Severe Thunderstorm Watch 30 includes nine counties in northwest Georgia, covering Carroll, Chattooga, Dade, Floyd, Haralson, Heard, Polk, Troup, and Walker counties. Storms developing across Alabama are expected to move east into Georgia during the evening hours, capable of producing wind gusts exceeding 60 mph, frequent lightning, and brief torrential rain.
Cities including Rome, Carrollton, LaGrange, Summerville, Trenton, and Cedartown are within the watch area. Sudden heavy rain could reduce visibility on Interstate 75 near the Rome area, Interstate 20 near Carrollton, and U.S. 27 through Floyd and Polk counties. Isolated downed tree limbs and spotty power outages may occur where stronger storm cores develop.
Residents should secure loose outdoor items, charge electronic devices, and move indoors when thunder is heard. Drivers are urged to slow down during heavy rainfall and avoid stopping under trees or power lines.
Thunderstorm coverage may increase through the evening, and additional warnings could be issued before the watch expires at 10 p.m. Monday as storms track across northwest Georgia.
