Atlanta, Georgia – Scattered afternoon storms are set to develop across Georgia Friday, bringing a risk of lightning and gusty winds that could disrupt outdoor plans from Atlanta to Augusta between 3 and 9 p.m. While the overall risk for damaging wind remains low, a few stronger storms may form—especially in east Georgia.

According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, today’s severe weather threat will be highest late this afternoon and early evening, with isolated gusts reaching up to 60 mph in some spots. Areas from Athens to Savannah may experience brief downpours, pea-sized hail, and dangerous lightning strikes. Outdoor events and activities are most at risk during this period, and lightning could quickly force delays or cancellations.

Drivers on I-20 and I-16 should watch for rapidly changing road conditions and ponding on highways during downpours. Residents are urged to secure outdoor furniture and stay indoors if thunder roars. Those in east Georgia, including Richmond and Columbia counties, should keep phones charged and pay attention to alerts.

The severe weather risk will taper off after 9 p.m., but patchy fog is possible overnight. Stay tuned for additional updates as new advisories may be issued if storms intensify.
