Macon, Georgia – Gusty northwest winds and humidity dropping below 25 percent are creating dangerous fire conditions across central and east central Georgia through early evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. Monday for a large stretch of the state, including Muscogee, Houston, Sumter, Dooly, Dodge, Telfair and Toombs counties. Northwest winds of 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph, combined with dry fuels and afternoon temperatures in the 40s, are increasing the risk of rapid fire spread.

The warning includes the Oconee National Forest and communities such as Macon, Columbus, Warner Robins, Americus and Thomaston. Even small sparks from equipment, debris burning or discarded cigarettes could ignite fast-moving grass or brush fires under these conditions.

Officials strongly discourage outdoor burning and urge residents to check with local burn permitting authorities before lighting any fire. Fire crews are on alert for potential flare-ups through sunset.

Conditions are expected to improve after 7 p.m. as winds ease and humidity begins to recover, but elevated fire danger could persist if dry weather continues.
