Atlanta, GA – A high fire danger warning has been issued for North and Central Georgia as dry conditions and low humidity increase the risk of wildfires. The warning is in effect from noon to 7 p.m. Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, relative humidity levels are expected to drop below 25% for four or more hours this afternoon. Winds will be coming from the north to northwest at 5 to 10 mph, further contributing to fire hazards. Dry brush and leaf litter have also accumulated due to a lack of rainfall, creating favorable conditions for fires to spread quickly.
The affected areas include major cities such as Atlanta, Athens, Gainesville, and Macon, as well as rural counties across North and Central Georgia. The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, SC, has also issued a similar fire danger alert for Northeast Georgia, warning residents of Rabun, Habersham, Stephens, Franklin, Hart, and Elbert counties of heightened wildfire risks.
Authorities urge residents to check with local burn permitting agencies before conducting any outdoor burning. If burning is necessary, extreme caution is advised, as fires could quickly get out of control under these conditions.
Residents are encouraged to avoid outdoor activities that involve open flames or sparks and to report any signs of wildfire to emergency services immediately.
