Atlanta, Georgia – Minor river flooding will threaten roads, trails, and farmland across central Georgia from Wednesday through late Friday as the Oconee and Ocmulgee rivers continue to swell following recent rainfall. Residents near Penfield and Macon should prepare for continued high water, with travel and outdoor activities likely to be affected.

According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, the Oconee River near Penfield is forecast to rise above flood stage by Wednesday morning, cresting near 13.7 feet Wednesday evening before receding below flood stage by Thursday morning. Flooding will cover parts of Georgia Highway 15 and overflow into nearby agricultural land and pastures, with up to two feet of water in low-lying areas. Meanwhile, the Ocmulgee River near Macon will remain above flood stage until Friday evening. Trails along the Macon GreenWay, including areas north of the Martin Luther King Boulevard bridge and Spring Street Landing, are expected to see about a foot of water, affecting foot bridges, parking lots, and access roads in Amerson Park.

Drivers are urged to avoid flooded roads and heed posted warnings. Most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles, so “turn around, don’t drown” remains the best safety advice. Outdoor enthusiasts should avoid the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail and riverside parks until waters recede. Residents near both rivers should keep devices charged in case of power interruptions and move valuables from flood-prone areas.

Flood warnings will remain in effect until at least Thursday afternoon for the Oconee and Friday evening for the Ocmulgee. Additional alerts may be issued as conditions change.
