Atlanta, Ga. – Damaging winds, torrential rain, and the potential for flash flooding are expected across North and Central Georgia Tuesday afternoon and evening, with the greatest threat between 3 p.m. and 11 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Atlanta, isolated strong to severe thunderstorms may develop across the region, producing wind gusts up to 60 mph and heavy rainfall. The storms are expected to be particularly efficient at producing localized flooding, especially in areas along and north of I-20.

Cities including Atlanta, Rome, Athens, and Gainesville are under a marginal to slight risk for flash flooding, with some storms capable of dropping 1 to 2 inches of rain in a short period. Frequent lightning is expected, and dime- to quarter-size hail could accompany stronger cells. Commuters and evening travelers should be alert for ponding on roadways and rapidly changing conditions.

Residents are urged to avoid low-lying roads during heavy downpours, charge phones in case of power outages, and monitor local alerts. While tornado potential remains low, conditions could quickly escalate.

Severe weather watches and warnings may be issued later today as the system evolves.
