Atlanta, GA – Georgia residents are facing dangerously cold conditions today as an extreme cold warning remains in effect until noon. Wind chills across north central, northeast, and northwest regions are as low as 0°F, creating significant risks to health and infrastructure.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, the prolonged freezing temperatures could cause water pipes to rupture and pose a frostbite risk for those outside without proper protection. The warning covers major cities, including Atlanta, Gainesville, Rome, and Carrollton.
Residents are urged to dress in layers, wear hats and gloves, and stay indoors whenever possible. To protect plumbing, officials recommend wrapping or draining pipes and allowing faucets to drip slowly. In-ground sprinkler systems should also be drained, and pets should be brought indoors.
Older residents and neighbors should be checked on frequently, and portable heaters must be used with care to prevent fires. Generators or grills should never be used indoors due to carbon monoxide risks.
The extreme cold is expected to ease after noon, but residents should remain cautious and prepared for potential freezing conditions in the coming days.
