McDonough, Ga. –An EF-2 tornado tore through Henry County on Wednesday afternoon, carving a nearly two-mile path and packing winds up to 135 mph, according to the National Weather Service.
The tornado struck between 3:31 and 3:36 p.m. on May 29, damaging parts of the county with a maximum path width of 200 yards. The NWS Peachtree City office confirmed the rating Thursday following a detailed damage survey. Two injuries were reported; no fatalities have been confirmed.
Emergency crews responded to multiple damaged structures and downed trees near McDonough and Locust Grove. Residents described roofs being ripped off homes and vehicles tossed in driveways. Authorities urged those in the area to steer clear of debris zones and allow utility crews space to work.
This marks the strongest tornado in Henry County since a 2011 outbreak, with officials noting how quickly conditions escalated. Residents are encouraged to review tornado safety plans and sign up for severe weather alerts ahead of the upcoming storm season.
Weather officials say no further severe weather is expected in the immediate term, but damage assessments and cleanup operations are ongoing.
