Georgia Weather Alert: EF1 Tornado Hits Mitchell County with 105 mph Winds

Mitchell County, GA – A tornado that touched down early Sunday morning in Mitchell County has been classified as an EF1 by the National Weather Service, with peak winds reaching 105 mph.

According to the NWS Tallahassee, the tornado formed at 6:28 a.m. EDT on March 16 and traveled 5.31 miles before dissipating at 6:36 a.m. It had a maximum width of 1,200 yards and caused structural damage, including the destruction of a volunteer fire department and a community voting center.

The storm began south of Highway 37, uprooting trees and damaging irrigation systems before crossing Highway 37 into Pebble City. As it moved northeast, it snapped softwood trees and damaged multiple structures along its path. The tornado caused significant damage to homes along Old Doerun Road, shifting a manufactured home off its foundation and blowing out windows.

No injuries or fatalities were reported. The NWS noted that this assessment remains preliminary, with final verification to come. Residents are advised to remain alert as severe weather season continues.
