Atlanta, Ga. – North and central Georgia enjoy a stretch of dry skies through midweek, but storm chances build just in time for Labor Day weekend. Drivers should plan ahead, as late-week thunderstorms could impact travel corridors like I-75, I-85, and I-20.

According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, Tuesday will bring mostly sunny skies and highs near 81 degrees. Winds from the northwest stay light, making for comfortable conditions across Atlanta, Athens, and Gainesville. The calm weather pattern holds through Thursday, giving residents several days of warm, dry afternoons.

The break comes to an end late Thursday into Friday when scattered showers and thunderstorms push into the region. Storm coverage could affect both morning commutes and evening plans. With many expected to hit the roads for Labor Day getaways, wet pavement and reduced visibility may slow traffic on interstates and rural highways.

Forecasters currently expect storms to remain scattered, but travelers should keep phones charged and check road conditions before heading out. Packing an umbrella and allowing extra drive time is advised. While severe weather is not anticipated, lightning and brief downpours could disrupt outdoor events Friday evening.

By the weekend, a 20 percent chance of storms lingers into Saturday and Sunday, but much of the region should still see periods of sunshine. Families planning barbecues or football gatherings may need to keep a tent or shelter option nearby.

Clearer skies hold through Wednesday, but Labor Day weekend could bring changing conditions quickly. More updates are expected later this week as confidence in timing improves.
