Columbus, GA – Dense fog settled over west central Georgia early Tuesday, significantly reducing visibility for drivers from Columbus to Newnan and surrounding areas.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. EDT for 18 counties, including Muscogee, Coweta, Spalding, Fayette, Clayton, and Troup. Visibility may drop to one-quarter mile or less during the morning commute, increasing the risk of accidents on major highways and local roads.
Cities impacted by the advisory include Columbus, Peachtree City, Fort Benning, Griffin, and Stockbridge. Local law enforcement and emergency services have urged drivers to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and leave extra following distance.
This type of dense fog is common during spring mornings in Georgia when moist air meets cooler overnight temperatures. Although the fog is expected to lift by mid-morning, residual moisture may linger on roads, especially in shaded or low-lying areas.
Residents should check traffic conditions before heading out and allow extra time for travel. The advisory marks the fifth such alert issued in March by the National Weather Service for the region, highlighting ongoing weather volatility as seasonal changes progress.
