Atlanta, GA – Heavy thunderstorms are set to sweep across Atlanta and much of north and central Georgia Wednesday night, bringing the highest risk of locally heavy rainfall this week. Commuters and late-night travelers could face slick roads and reduced visibility as storms intensify after sunset.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, widespread showers and embedded thunderstorms will build through Wednesday afternoon, with coverage peaking in the evening hours. Rainfall amounts could range from a quarter to half an inch in most areas, but isolated pockets may see more. While severe weather is not expected, the intensity of rainfall could cause temporary flooding in low-lying or poorly drained spots.
Residents in Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb, and Gwinnett counties should be prepared for potential delays on I-75, I-85, and I-20 during the evening commute. Outdoor events Wednesday night should have a backup plan as lightning and downpours may develop quickly.
Storm activity will remain possible each afternoon through Sunday, but the midweek period—especially Wednesday and Thursday—will see the broadest coverage. Conditions may improve slightly by Friday, but scattered showers remain in the outlook. More updates will be issued if rainfall rates increase or flooding concerns develop.
