Douglas, Georgia – Temperatures falling to around 31°F before sunrise Tuesday could damage crops and sensitive plants across southeast Georgia, prompting a Freeze Warning for several inland counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Jacksonville, the Freeze Warning is in effect from 4 a.m. to 8 a.m. EDT Tuesday for Coffee, Jeff Davis, Bacon, Appling, and Atkinson counties, including the cities of Douglas, Baxley, Alma, Hazlehurst, and Pearson. Clear skies and light winds will allow temperatures to quickly fall below freezing during the early morning hours.
Sensitive vegetation and early-season crops could suffer damage if left unprotected, especially in rural areas where temperatures may drop slightly lower.
Another round of cold weather is also expected later in the week. A Freeze Watch has been issued from late Tuesday night through Wednesday morning for a wider area of southeast Georgia, including Waycross, Jesup, Folkston, Nahunta, Blackshear, and Homerville, where temperatures could dip to around 30°F.
Residents are urged to cover tender plants, bring outdoor pets inside, and protect exposed plumbing ahead of the coldest temperatures. Forecasters say additional freeze warnings may be issued if confidence increases in sub-freezing temperatures by Wednesday morning.
