Atlanta, Georgia – A sharp late-season cold snap could drive temperatures down to 20°F across much of Georgia by early Tuesday morning, threatening crops, gardens, and exposed plumbing across more than 90 counties.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, a Freeze Watch is in effect from Monday evening through Tuesday morning for a large portion of the state, including north Georgia, metro Atlanta, and much of central Georgia. Overnight lows could drop well below freezing, especially in rural areas where calm winds and clear skies allow temperatures to fall quickly.
Major population centers including Atlanta, Athens, Macon, Columbus, Gainesville, Rome, and Warner Robins are all within the watch area. Communities along the I-75, I-85, and I-20 corridors could see temperatures fall into the mid-20s to near 20°F before sunrise Tuesday, creating widespread frost and freeze conditions.
Agricultural areas across central and southern Georgia face the greatest risk. Early spring crops, fruit blossoms, and landscaping plants may suffer damage after several hours below freezing. Residents should cover sensitive plants, bring potted vegetation indoors, and wrap or drip outdoor pipes to prevent freezing.
The coldest conditions are expected between midnight and 8 a.m. Tuesday, with temperatures rising above freezing shortly after sunrise. Additional freeze warnings could be issued if confidence in the colder temperatures increases.
