Atlanta, GA – A tornado watch has been issued for 78 counties across Georgia, with severe weather expected to persist until 10 a.m. EDT Sunday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Storm Prediction Center.

The watch, which went into effect at 2:15 a.m. EDT, includes major areas such as Bibb, Clarke, Columbia, Houston, Richmond, and Walton counties. Residents in the affected regions are urged to stay alert for rapidly changing weather conditions, as severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes, damaging winds, and heavy rainfall are possible.

According to the NWS, atmospheric conditions are favorable for tornado development, with strong wind shear and moisture creating instability in the region. While no tornadoes have been confirmed yet, officials warn that the situation could escalate quickly.

Residents should review emergency plans and ensure they have access to weather alerts. The NWS advises taking shelter in a sturdy building, away from windows, and having an emergency kit prepared with essential supplies. If a tornado warning is issued, individuals should seek shelter in a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a building.

The severe weather threat is expected to diminish later in the morning as the storm system moves eastward. However, forecasters recommend staying informed through local authorities and the NWS for further updates.
