Atlanta, Georgia – A punishing mix of heat and storms will grip Georgia this Thursday, threatening power outages, downed trees, and dangerous driving along I-75 and I-85.

According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, a Heat Advisory remains in effect until 8 PM Wednesday, with heat index values reaching 109°F. By Thursday afternoon, expect scattered thunderstorms across north and central Georgia. Damaging winds up to 70 mph and hail are possible from 1 PM through early Friday morning, with the strongest storms expected between 6 PM and 4 AM.

Cities like Atlanta, Macon, Athens, and Rome will face the brunt of both the heat and storms. Residents are urged to stay indoors, hydrate often, and avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm hours. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) advises taking frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned spaces. Heat stroke is an emergency — call 911 if symptoms occur.

Power outages and tree damage are possible, especially during Thursday night’s stronger cells. Quarter-size hail and flash flooding on major interstates may also develop. Those using I-20, I-75, and I-85 corridors should monitor conditions closely.

Storm activity continues into early next week, with additional rounds of showers and storms likely through Tuesday. Stay weather-aware and prepare for brief disruptions in outdoor plans.
