Columbia, SC – Residents across central South Carolina and east central Georgia are being urged to prepare for dangerously cold temperatures as an Extreme Cold Watch goes into effect Sunday evening through Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
According to NWS forecasters, an Arctic air mass will push into the region late Sunday, sending overnight wind chills tumbling to near 11 degrees in areas including Richland, Lexington, Aiken, Orangeburg, Barnwell, Sumter, Burke, and Richmond counties. Officials warn that the extended period of freezing conditions may lead to ruptured water pipes, especially in homes not winterized for unusually sharp temperature drops.
NWS meteorologists said the coldest window is expected late Sunday night into early Monday, with temperatures dipping well below freezing as winds increase. Communities surrounding Columbia, Augusta, Orangeburg, and Sumter should expect the most significant freeze-related impacts and are advised to take precautions immediately.
Utility companies and emergency officials encourage households to wrap or insulate exposed pipes, allow faucets to drip slowly, and ensure pets and livestock have access to warm shelter. Residents who must be outdoors are urged to dress in layers, including hats, gloves, and face coverings to prevent frostbite.
More updates from the National Weather Service will be issued as the system approaches.
