Charleston, SC – Triple-digit heat index values are slamming the Lowcountry and Coastal Empire today, with dangerous conditions expected across Savannah, Charleston, and surrounding cities through 8 p.m. Wednesday. Health officials are urging everyone to take the heat seriously as temperatures and humidity combine to push the “feels-like” temperature up to 112°.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a Heat Advisory covers all of southeast Georgia and southeast South Carolina, including Chatham, Effingham, Liberty, Beaufort, Jasper, and Charleston counties. The advisory, in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., highlights the risk of heat illnesses—especially for those without reliable air conditioning or who work outdoors.
Major urban areas like Savannah, Hilton Head, and North Charleston could see the highest heat index readings, particularly along US-17, I-16, and I-95 corridors. Officials recommend drinking plenty of fluids, limiting time outside, and checking on vulnerable relatives and neighbors. Outdoor workers should schedule frequent rest breaks in the shade or air-conditioned spaces. Heat stroke is a medical emergency—move anyone affected to a cool area and call 911 immediately.
Cooling centers and community centers may open if conditions worsen. Today’s advisory comes during one of the hottest stretches of the summer, reminiscent of similar July heat waves in 2016 and 2019.
Dangerous heat is expected to persist into the evening. More advisories or warnings may be issued if the pattern holds.
