Charleston, South Carolina – Torrential downpours could lead to dangerous flash flooding across southeastern Georgia and South Carolina beginning Friday morning, with up to 6 inches of rain expected by late Saturday night.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Charleston, Columbia, and Peachtree City, a slow-moving front combined with tropical moisture will dump 2 to 4 inches of rain across the region, with localized amounts exceeding 6 inches. The flood watch spans from Augusta and Dublin to Savannah, Charleston, and Beaufort, impacting more than 40 counties.
Urban areas like Charleston, Savannah, and Augusta are especially vulnerable to drainage issues and rapid street flooding. Officials warn that storm drains and ditches may clog with debris, and low-lying roads could become impassable. Commuters should be prepared for potential road closures and delays, especially during the Friday evening and Saturday afternoon hours.
Creeks, rivers, and streams are also at risk of rising out of their banks. Those in flood-prone areas are urged to keep phones charged, avoid driving through water, and monitor alerts. Rain is expected to taper off early Sunday, but further advisories remain possible if ground saturation persists.
