Savannah, Ga. – Dangerous heat will grip parts of coastal Georgia and the South Carolina Lowcountry this afternoon, with heat indices reaching between 105 and 109 degrees for several hours. Temperatures in the lower 90s, combined with oppressive humidity, could make outdoor activity hazardous, particularly in inland areas away from ocean breezes.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, the most intense heat is expected from midday through late afternoon across Effingham, Bryan, Chatham, Liberty, McIntosh, Jasper, and Beaufort counties. While isolated showers and thunderstorms may cool a few spots, many areas will remain sweltering. If heat indices remain above 108 degrees for two hours or more, a Heat Advisory will be issued.
Emergency managers urge residents to limit strenuous activity during peak heat, stay hydrated, and wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing. Outdoor workers should take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned spaces, and anyone experiencing dizziness, confusion, or rapid pulse should seek medical help immediately.
The heat risk is expected to ease slightly by evening, but above-average humidity will persist through midweek. More heat advisories are possible if conditions intensify.
