Vidalia, Ga. – Strong thunderstorms are battering parts of southeastern Georgia this evening, bringing damaging winds and hail to several communities. Residents in Toombs, Emanuel, Treutlen, and Montgomery counties should brace for 60 mph wind gusts and penny-sized hail through 9 p.m. Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, the storm system was located near Nunez and Rock Springs around 8:12 p.m., moving northeast at 25 mph. Officials warn of potential damage to roofs, siding, and trees across affected areas, including Vidalia, Lyons, Swainsboro, and Twin City.
Drivers are urged to avoid travel along U.S. Highway 1 and Georgia Route 292 as debris and falling limbs may create hazardous road conditions. Power outages are also possible due to downed trees and power lines.
Residents should shelter in interior rooms away from windows and avoid using electrical appliances until storms pass. If damage occurs, report it to the National Weather Service once conditions are safe.
Storm warnings remain in effect until 9 p.m., and further advisories could follow if severe weather persists.
