Savannah, GA – The Chatham County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about an active phone scam in which callers impersonate deputies and attempt to pressure victims into paying fake fees for warrants, missed jury duty, or ankle monitor violations. Officials say the scam has resurfaced this week and is targeting households across the county.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, scammers are spoofing caller IDs to appear legitimate before demanding immediate payment, often through prepaid cards, digital transfers, or other untraceable methods. Deputies stressed that no member of the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office will ever call a resident to demand money of any kind.

Sheriff John T. Coleman urged the community to remain cautious and avoid sharing personal or financial information with unknown callers. “These scammers are preying on fear and intimidation. We want residents to know that law enforcement never handles warrants or jury-duty issues over the phone,” the Sheriff’s Office said in its alert.

Officials provided clear guidance for residents who receive these fraudulent calls:

Hang up immediately
Do not provide any personal or financial details
Report the scam to the Sheriff’s Office right away

The department said safety—online and in person—remains a top priority as investigators work to identify the source of the calls. Residents who are unsure whether a call is legitimate are encouraged to verify information directly by contacting the Sheriff’s Office at 912-652-7613.

Scam activity typically increases during the holiday season, and officials urge residents to remind family members—especially seniors—about recognizing fraudulent calls.
