Macon, Georgia – Sweltering heat grips much of central and eastern Georgia Sunday, with heat index values reaching up to 105° and a heat advisory in effect until 8 p.m. Drivers, outdoor workers, and families from Macon to Vidalia should take precautions as intense temperatures and humidity create a high risk of heat-related illnesses.

According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, the advisory covers over 30 counties—including Baldwin, Houston, Dublin, Warner Robins, Jeffersonville, and Milledgeville—beginning at 11 a.m. and continuing through the evening. The agency warns that heat illnesses are possible for anyone exposed too long to the sun or without access to air conditioning.

Residents in Forsyth, Sandersville, Cochran, Cordele, and surrounding areas are urged to avoid non-essential outdoor activities, stay hydrated, and check on vulnerable neighbors and relatives. Schools and employers should consider shifting strenuous activities indoors or rescheduling. Emergency officials recommend frequent breaks in shaded or cool environments for those who must work outside.

This wave of July heat rivals some of the hottest days Georgia has seen in recent years. With temperatures this extreme, even brief exposure can lead to heat exhaustion or stroke. Cooling centers may be available in some communities.

The heat advisory remains in effect through 8 p.m. tonight. Additional alerts may follow if dangerous conditions persist.
