Georgia – Residents across central and northeastern Georgia should brace for intense heat today, with a heat advisory in effect from noon to 8 p.m. The National Weather Service has warned that heat index values could soar up to 106°F in many areas, posing a significant risk for heat-related illnesses.

According to the National Weather Service, the combination of high temperatures and oppressive humidity will lead to dangerously hot conditions in several counties, including Athens, Macon, Warner Robins, and Milledgeville. Areas from Banks and Jackson counties to Bleckley and Laurens are expected to experience some of the highest heat indexes this afternoon.

Officials are urging residents to take extra precautions. Drink plenty of fluids, avoid direct sunlight, and remain in air-conditioned spaces where possible. It’s also crucial to check on vulnerable neighbors and family members.

In addition, outdoor workers and anyone involved in strenuous activity should limit their exposure to the heat. If you must be outside, try to schedule breaks in the shade or indoors. The heat advisory will end by 8 p.m. today, but more updates are possible depending on how the heat wave progresses.
