Macon, Georgia – Triple-digit heat index values could make Monday dangerous across much of Georgia, with conditions ripe for heat-related illnesses from Columbus to Athens.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, a heat advisory is in effect Monday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. for over 60 counties including Bibb, Clarke, Houston, Muscogee, and Telfair. Heat index values — the “feels like” temperature — are expected to reach 106° to 109° in many areas due to extreme humidity and high afternoon temperatures.
Cities like Macon, Warner Robins, and Athens could see the most oppressive conditions, with limited relief even in shaded areas. In Columbus and Fort Benning, military personnel and outdoor workers are urged to monitor for signs of heat exhaustion.
Residents are advised to stay indoors in air-conditioning, drink plenty of water, and check on vulnerable neighbors and pets. Children and the elderly are especially at risk. If outdoors, take frequent breaks and avoid strenuous activity during peak hours.
The advisory could extend into Tuesday if overnight cooling remains limited. Updates will be issued as conditions evolve.
