Athens, Ga. – Sweltering heat and dangerous humidity levels will grip Athens, Columbus, Macon, and much of central and northern Georgia until 8 p.m. Monday, with heat index values expected to soar well above 105 degrees.

According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, a heat advisory remains in effect for dozens of counties across central, northeast, and west central Georgia, including Clarke, Muscogee, Bibb, and surrounding areas. The advisory began at noon, with officials warning that excessive heat and humidity can quickly lead to heat-related illnesses, especially for those working or spending extended time outdoors.

Cities from Athens and Macon to Columbus and Monroe should prepare for oppressive afternoon and evening conditions. Residents are urged to stay in air-conditioned spaces when possible, limit time outside, and drink extra water. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends frequent breaks in shade for outdoor workers and checking on vulnerable neighbors and relatives.

Travelers should be cautious on major routes such as I-20, I-75, and US-441, where vehicle breakdowns or stalled traffic can quickly turn hazardous in this level of heat. Today’s event follows a trend of extreme summer heat across Georgia, reminiscent of previous record-setting July stretches.

This heat advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m., and further alerts may be issued if dangerous conditions persist. Stay tuned for updates and take all precautions to avoid heat illness.
