Atlanta, Georgia – Relentless heat and stifling humidity are taking hold across central and northern Georgia, with “feels like” temperatures soaring above 105°F in several cities through Tuesday. Health officials are warning residents in Atlanta, Columbus, and Macon to take urgent precautions as dangerous heat index values persist.
According to the National Weather Service in Atlanta, parts of central Georgia—including Macon and Columbus—will see heat advisories likely Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, as afternoon heat indices surge into the triple digits. The “feels like” temperature is forecast to hit 107°F in Macon and 105°F in Columbus on Monday, with Athens and Atlanta both reaching above 100°F through midweek.
Cities at highest risk include Macon (up to 107°F Monday), Columbus (105°F Monday, 104°F Tuesday), and Athens (104°F Monday). Atlanta’s heat index will climb to 103°F on Monday, while Rome will stay just below advisory levels. Residents in these areas should limit outdoor activity, especially during peak afternoon hours, and check on the elderly and pets.
The extreme heat is expected to strain local utilities and could cause minor road or rail disruptions. Residents are urged to stay hydrated, seek shade, and avoid strenuous work outdoors. Emergency officials advise everyone to monitor for additional advisories and be prepared for prolonged heat through Wednesday.
Heat advisories may be extended as temperatures remain elevated. More updates will be provided if warnings are expanded or conditions worsen.
