Tallahassee, Florida – Sweltering heat will grip the Florida Panhandle and neighboring South Georgia today, with heat index values surging to a dangerous 108° by midday. Residents in Tallahassee, Panama City, and Valdosta should brace for oppressive humidity and the increased risk of heat-related illnesses through 8 p.m. Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, a Heat Advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. EDT (10 a.m. CDT) until 8 p.m. EDT (7 p.m. CDT), covering much of the Big Bend, Florida Panhandle, and bordering areas of Georgia. The advisory warns that “hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses,” especially for those spending extended time outdoors.
Communities including Marianna, Quincy, Bainbridge, and Thomasville can expect intense afternoon conditions. Emergency management officials urge everyone to drink plenty of fluids, seek air conditioning, and avoid strenuous activity during peak heat. Those working outside should reschedule tasks for early morning or late evening and take frequent breaks in the shade.
Schools, road crews, and local utilities are monitoring the situation closely. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration also recommends checking on vulnerable neighbors and being alert for signs of heat exhaustion or stroke.
This extreme heat event is expected to ease by tonight, but advisories could be extended if conditions persist. Stay tuned for updates from local agencies as the situation develops.
