ATLANTA, Ga. – Warm, humid air clings to the South this morning, but a sharp, winter-like change is already on the horizon. Thunder rumbles through parts of north and central Georgia today, and by late Sunday, the region will plunge into its first major cold snap of the season.
According to the National Weather Service in Peachtree City, a Freeze Watch is now in effect from late Sunday night through Monday morning for much of northern and central Georgia, including metro Atlanta. Temperatures are expected to fall into the upper 20s and low 30s, ending the growing season and posing a threat to unprotected plants and outdoor plumbing.
Scattered showers and a few strong thunderstorms will roll through this afternoon and early evening, mainly along and north of I-20. Gusty winds and heavy rain may briefly impact travel on I-75, I-285, and I-85. By Sunday, skies clear, and cooler, drier air sweeps in behind the front, with highs near 66 before temperatures plunge after sunset.
Monday morning will greet early commuters with widespread frost and possible sub-freezing readings, especially north and west of Atlanta. Even downtown could dip to near freezing, a stark contrast to this week’s upper 70s.
Veterans Day looks sunny but brisk, with highs around 49 and a crisp north breeze. The chill lingers through midweek before temperatures moderate again. After all, this may only be Georgia’s first true “winter tease” of November — but it’s a strong reminder that the season’s shift is underway.
