Atlanta, Georgia – An Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect across much of north and central Georgia as dangerously low temperatures and wind chills persist through late Sunday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Atlanta, “feels like” temperatures are ranging from -5 to 5 degrees, with wind chills as low as -15 degrees in the mountains. The warning is valid through 1 p.m. Sunday, with conditions expected to gradually improve early this afternoon.

Forecasters said the combination of very cold air and wind is creating dangerous exposure conditions, especially during the morning hours. Anyone spending extended time outdoors is at increased risk for hypothermia and frostbite, particularly without proper winter clothing.

Major travel corridors including Interstate 75, Interstate 85, Interstate 20, and Interstate 985 are within the warned area. While no winter precipitation is expected, the cold temperatures alone pose hazards for motorists, pedestrians, and those stranded without adequate heat.

The National Weather Service urged residents to dress in layers, including hats and gloves, if going outside. Officials also emphasized checking on vulnerable populations, including the elderly, young children, and those without reliable heating.

Those without power or adequate heating face a higher risk of cold-related illness, and warming shelters may be needed in some communities. Officials also reminded residents to protect pets, plants, and exposed pipes from freezing conditions.

As temperatures slowly rise later today, the immediate danger will lessen, but cold conditions may linger into the evening. Additional cold mornings remain possible in the days ahead, though not at the same severity.

Residents across north and central Georgia are encouraged to continue monitoring official forecasts and follow guidance from local emergency management agencies until the warning expires.
