Northeast Georgia, Western North Carolina, and Upstate South Carolina – A Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Friday afternoon through Sunday morning across a large portion of the southern Appalachians, with accumulating snow, gusty winds, and hazardous travel conditions possible.
According to the National Weather Service in Greenville–Spartanburg, snow accumulations of 4 to 7 inches are possible east of Interstate 26, while 2 to 4 inches are expected across much of the remainder of the region. Wind gusts may reach 25 to 35 mph, increasing the risk of blowing snow and reduced visibility.
The watch includes areas of northeast Georgia, western North Carolina, and Upstate South Carolina, affecting communities such as Asheville, Hendersonville, Boone, Charlotte, Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson, Clemson, Hickory, Lenoir, Gastonia, and Rock Hill, along with surrounding mountain and foothill areas.
Forecasters warn that snow is expected to rapidly stick to roads due to temperatures remaining in the 20s, which could cause travel conditions to deteriorate quickly as early as Friday evening, including during the evening commute. The weight of snow on trees and power lines may lead to scattered power outages, while gusty winds Saturday could produce blowing snow and very poor visibility.
Residents are urged to monitor forecast updates closely and prepare for significant travel disruptions throughout the weekend.
