Charleston, S.C. – Strong rip currents and pounding surf will keep beachgoers at risk along the South Carolina and Georgia coasts through Thursday evening, with waves climbing as high as 6 feet.
According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a High Surf Advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. Thursday, while the risk for rip currents continues through tonight. Officials warn swimmers to stay close to shore, as rip currents can quickly pull even experienced swimmers into deeper water.
The advisory stretches across popular beaches including Folly Beach, Isle of Palms, Hilton Head, and Tybee Island in Georgia. Coastal erosion is also expected in some areas, particularly during high tide cycles. Lifeguards are urging swimmers to stay out of rough surf and never swim alone.
If caught in a rip current, officials say the best strategy is to remain calm, float, and swim parallel to shore until able to escape. Visitors are encouraged to check with local lifeguards before entering the water and to avoid unguarded areas altogether until conditions improve.
Hazards are expected to ease late Thursday evening, but forecasters caution that additional beach advisories are possible as unsettled weather continues into the weekend.
