Atlanta, GA – Snow made a rare appearance across parts of Georgia and Florida this weekend, leaving residents stunned as flurries fell as far south as Gainesville and Tallahassee. While accumulations remained light—mostly under 1 inch—the brief snow event marked one of the deepest southern reaches of wintry weather so far this season.
According to the National Weather Service Eastern Region, colder-than-normal air paired with upper-level moisture allowed snowflakes to mix in with rain bands late Saturday into early Sunday. Northeast Georgia, including parts of Hall and Rabun counties, saw light coatings on grassy surfaces and elevated roads. In metro Atlanta, flurries were reported from Marietta to Stone Mountain, though pavement stayed mostly wet.
Further south, parts of northern Florida experienced a trace to light dusting, especially in higher terrain near the Panhandle. Social media lit up with videos showing snowflakes drifting through the air in cities like Tallahassee and Lake City—a rare visual for a region more accustomed to sunshine in January.
No major impacts were reported, but drivers in the northern tier of both states were urged to use caution on bridges and overpasses where brief icing was possible overnight.
Colder temperatures will linger into midweek, but no additional snow is expected at this time.
