Tallahassee, Florida – Severe storms could rattle the Southeast Wednesday evening as scorching temperatures push into the upper 90s across Florida’s Panhandle, southwest Georgia, and southeast Alabama.

According to the National Weather Service in Tallahassee, a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) is in place through late tonight for damaging wind gusts, prolific lightning, and small hail. The warning covers key cities including Tallahassee, Albany, Dothan, and Panama City. Thunderstorms will begin developing this afternoon and could strengthen into a large, organized cluster by nightfall.

Afternoon highs are topping out near 99°F in cities like Albany, Bainbridge, and Panama City—marking the final day of an early-summer heat wave. Heat index values could climb even higher ahead of the storms. Drivers and outdoor workers should take precautions against both heat and lightning as conditions rapidly shift.

Communities like Valdosta, DeFuniak Springs, and Tifton may also see intense downpours after sunset. Residents are urged to stay weather-aware, charge mobile devices, and avoid sheltering under trees or small structures when lightning begins.

Storm threats should diminish early Thursday, with temperatures falling closer to seasonal norms by Friday.
