Davison, MI – After two years of construction and traffic detours, I-475 in Genesee County has officially reopened to drivers following a $141 million reconstruction project. The reopening marks a major milestone in Michigan’s ongoing effort to modernize key roadways across the state.
According to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), the project rebuilt roughly three miles of freeway between the Flint River and Carpenter Road, including both northbound and southbound lanes and 19 structures along the corridor. A new bridge over the Flint River was also completed as part of the improvements.
Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II joined local and state officials Friday for a ribbon-cutting ceremony on the Russel Avenue Bridge overlooking I-475, calling the project a symbol of progress for Mid-Michigan. “When we fix a freeway, when we repair a road, we make the community safer,” Gilchrist said. “This project represents Michigan moving forward.”
The reconstructed section, which carries more than 36,000 vehicles daily, reopened to traffic on Sept. 29, 2025. It was part of Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s Rebuilding Michigan program, designed to enhance safety and reliability for drivers and commercial traffic.
MDOT announced that the next phase — a $270 million rebuild of I-475’s middle and south segments between the Flint River and Bristol Road — is scheduled to begin in spring 2026.
