Wilmington, IL – The Gemini Giant, an emblematic figure of Route 66’s storied past, will continue to grace Wilmington thanks to a united community effort. In an exciting development for local residents and Route 66 enthusiasts alike, the City of Wilmington has announced the statue’s stay within the city, following its purchase at auction for $275,000 by the Joliet Area Historical Museum and subsequent donation to Wilmington.

According to the City of Wilmington in a press release Wednesday afternoon, the significant achievement was the result of a collaborative endeavor involving the Joliet Area Historical Museum and the City, with substantial support from a grant awarded by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.

The initiative was further bolstered by State Representative Anthony DeLuca, demonstrating a shared commitment to preserving the cultural and historical fabric of the Route 66 community.

In preparation for its continued life in Wilmington, the Gemini Giant will undergo a meticulous dismantling process, managed with expertise to ensure its integrity. Upon completion of the careful dismantling, the Gemini Giant will be reassembled at a new, prominent location within South Island Park.
