Gaylord, Michigan – Drivers across northern Michigan should prepare for messy travel conditions today as periods of rain, snow, and a rain-snow mix create slushy roads before colder air and accumulating snow arrive tonight.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, temperatures today are expected to range from the mid-30s to near 40 degrees, warm enough for rain at times but cold enough for snow to mix in, especially during heavier precipitation. Parts of eastern Upper Michigan could see up to 2 inches of wet, slushy snow by this evening, while lower elevations and areas farther south may experience more rain than snow initially.

Some isolated spots could briefly see freezing rain early or during heavier bursts, though most locations should remain just above freezing through much of the day. Even so, untreated roads, bridges, and parking lots may become slick as precipitation intensity fluctuates.

Conditions will change more quickly tonight. Forecasters say colder air will move in late this evening, allowing rain to transition fully to snow across northern Lower Michigan and eastern Upper Michigan. At the same time, winds are expected to strengthen, leading to falling temperatures and periods of accumulating snow overnight.

Strong winds combined with colder temperatures may lead to reduced visibility in open areas and create slick, snow-covered roads by early Wednesday morning. Overnight lows are expected to fall into the teens and lower 20s, allowing slush and standing water to freeze solid.

Wednesday is expected to remain cold and snowy, with highs struggling to reach the upper teens to mid-20s. Additional snow showers are possible, especially in snowbelt areas, keeping travel conditions challenging at times.

Motorists are urged to use caution today as conditions shift from wet to wintry, and to be prepared for a more winter-like drive late tonight into Wednesday morning. Allow extra travel time, slow down on slushy roads, and be alert for rapidly changing conditions.

Winter weather advisories or additional alerts may be issued as colder air settles in, and residents should monitor updated forecasts through tonight.
