Gaylord, MI – Residents across northern Michigan should prepare for a sharp cool-down tonight as clear skies and brisk northwest winds usher in much colder air. The National Weather Service in Gaylord reports that frost is likely to form overnight, especially in interior regions away from the Great Lakes.
According to the agency, daytime conditions Tuesday will remain blustery and sharply cooler, with highs ranging from the upper 50s to mid-60s across much of the northern Lower Peninsula and eastern Upper Peninsula. Winds will remain breezy through the afternoon, particularly along exposed lakeshore areas.
Tonight, skies will clear and temperatures are expected to drop quickly after sunset, with overnight lows dipping into the low to mid-30s inland and near 40 degrees along the lakeshores. The NWS warns that widespread frost is likely in sheltered areas from Grayling to Gaylord and Atlanta, potentially damaging sensitive vegetation and gardens.
Residents are advised to protect plants and outdoor items before nightfall. Conditions will begin to moderate later in the week, with daytime highs returning closer to seasonal averages by Thursday.
This forecast marks a notable shift after several unseasonably warm days earlier this month.
