Gaylord, Mich. – Scattered showers and thunderstorms are set to sweep across northern Michigan today, with the greatest chance for rain developing from late this morning into the evening. Stronger storms could pack lightning, gusty winds, and short bursts of heavy rain, raising travel and outdoor safety concerns.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, the unsettled weather will taper off tonight, leaving the region dry through the end of the week. Temperatures will gradually climb, bringing warmer afternoons as the weekend approaches. However, officials caution that smoke from Canadian wildfires could drift into the area Wednesday and Thursday, potentially affecting air quality and visibility.
Cities including Gaylord, Petoskey, and Traverse City could see downpours strong enough to cause brief ponding on roads. Residents are advised to secure loose outdoor items and limit exposure during lightning activity. Overnight, patchy fog may reduce visibility for early morning drivers.
Clear skies return Wednesday, holding through Friday before the next round of showers and storms moves in Saturday.
