GAYLORD, Mich. – Warm, dry air sweeping across Northern Michigan this weekend is raising fire danger across much of the region, as forecasters warn that gusty southwest winds and low humidity could quickly spread any new fires by Sunday afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, conditions will remain dry through Sunday before a sharp shift in weather brings rain and possible thunderstorms on Monday. Rip currents are also likely along Lake Michigan beaches Sunday, creating additional hazards for swimmers and boaters.
Temperatures will climb into the mid-80s Saturday before settling near 81°F Sunday under mostly sunny skies. Winds may gust up to 25 mph at times. By Monday, showers and isolated thunderstorms could break the dry streak, with a 70% chance of rain continuing into Tuesday.
Officials urge residents to avoid outdoor burning through Sunday evening and to secure loose outdoor items ahead of the incoming storm system. Spotter activation is not anticipated at this time, but additional alerts may be issued if storms strengthen.
