Gaylord, Michigan – A wintry mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain is expected to impact northern Michigan today through tonight, with snow totals up to 8 inches in parts of eastern Upper Michigan and ice accumulations up to 0.10 inch possible across portions of northern Lower Michigan.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, the wintry mix is peaking this morning, with hazardous travel conditions expected as precipitation continues through the day. Forecasters say the greatest snowfall is expected across eastern Upper Michigan, where 4 to 8 inches of snow could accumulate by early evening.

Across northern Lower Michigan, precipitation is expected to fall as a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain, limiting snow totals but increasing the risk of ice. Ice accumulations of up to one-tenth of an inch are possible south of Grand Traverse Bay, which could lead to slippery roads and untreated surfaces becoming hazardous.

Snow and wintry precipitation are forecast to taper to drizzle or freezing drizzle late this afternoon into tonight, particularly in areas where temperatures hover near freezing. Daytime highs today are expected to range from 27 to 36 degrees, with overnight lows falling to between 18 and 27 degrees, allowing any moisture on roads to refreeze.

The Weather Service warns that visibility may be reduced during periods of heavier snow and that road conditions could deteriorate quickly, especially during the morning hours. Drivers are urged to slow down and allow extra travel time.

Conditions are expected to turn drier but colder Saturday, before another system brings more snow and gusty winds later Sunday into early next week. Residents are encouraged to monitor updates as conditions evolve.
