Gaylord, Michigan – Hazardous winter weather is expected to impact northern Michigan from Friday into early Saturday, with snow-covered roads, blowing snow, and dangerously cold wind chills developing across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, light snow is expected Thursday, with 1 to 2 inches possible, along with freezing drizzle, especially west of Interstate 75. Conditions are expected to deteriorate significantly on Friday as an arctic cold front moves through the area.

Snow and gusty winds are forecast Friday afternoon into Friday night, leading to blowing and drifting snow and reduced visibility, particularly along major corridors including I-75, US-131, and M-32. An additional 1 to 2 inches of snow is possible, though localized higher impacts may occur where blowing snow reduces visibility to near zero at times.

The most dangerous conditions are expected Friday night, when temperatures drop sharply behind the front. Wind chills are forecast to fall into the -15°F to -25°F range, increasing the risk of frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. Snow chances may linger overnight, further complicating travel for overnight drivers and early-morning commuters.

Lingering snow showers are expected early Saturday, but the primary concern will remain the extreme cold. The coldest wind chills are expected between late Friday night and Saturday morning, before slowly improving later Saturday.

Drivers are urged to prepare for rapidly changing conditions, carry winter survival kits, and avoid unnecessary travel Friday night if possible. This event may especially impact commuters, students, and workers traveling overnight or early Saturday.
