Gaylord, MI – Heavy wet snow and freezing rain are expected to create hazardous travel conditions across northern Michigan late tonight through Wednesday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, a mix of accumulating snow and freezing rain will move across much of northern Lower and eastern Upper Michigan. The heaviest snow and icing are expected Wednesday morning, when travel impacts may be greatest.

Forecast snowfall totals range from 6 to 10 inches in parts of northern Lower Michigan, with locally higher amounts possible. Areas closer to the Straits and eastern sections could see a sharp cutoff between heavier snow and heavier icing. Ice accumulations of up to one-quarter inch are possible in some locations.

Major roadways including Interstate 75, U.S. 131, U.S. 31, and U.S. 23 may experience snow-covered or ice-coated conditions, particularly during the Wednesday morning commute. Reduced visibility and slick roads are likely during periods of heavier precipitation.

The combination of heavy, wet snow and ice may also lead to localized power outages due to downed tree limbs and stressed power lines.

Forecasters note there remains uncertainty in exact snow and ice amounts, especially across northern Lower Michigan where precipitation type could shift. Residents are urged to monitor updated forecasts as the system develops.

Drivers, students, and early-shift workers should prepare for slower travel and rapidly changing conditions through Wednesday night.
