Gaylord, Michigan – Accumulating lake-effect snow and hazardous travel conditions are expected across the Gaylord area through Wednesday evening as a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect, according to the National Weather Service.
The National Weather Service in Gaylord reports that lake-effect snow will intensify beginning this afternoon and continue through 7 p.m. Wednesday. Snowfall totals of 4 to 8 inches are expected across Otsego County and surrounding areas, with localized amounts greater than 8 inches possible in persistent snow bands.
Early Tuesday conditions at Gaylord Regional Airport showed temperatures near 16°F, with light snow falling and wind chills around 3°F. Northwest winds of 12 to 20 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph, are expected to produce blowing snow and reduced visibility, particularly in open and rural areas.
Snow showers are forecast to become widespread Tuesday night, with precipitation chances reaching 80 to 90 percent. Additional snow accumulation of around 2 inches is possible Tuesday night, followed by another 1 to 2 inches during the day Wednesday as lake-enhanced snow continues.
The most hazardous travel conditions are expected during the Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning commutes, when snow-covered roads, drifting snow, and rapidly changing visibility may occur. The National Weather Service warns that travel could be very difficult at times.
Temperatures will remain well below freezing throughout the event. Highs Wednesday are forecast near 19°F, with overnight lows dropping to around 7°F Wednesday night.
Snow chances gradually diminish Wednesday night, with lingering snow showers possible into New Year’s Day. Highs on New Year’s Day are expected to reach near 14°F, with continued cold conditions into the weekend.
Spotters are encouraged to report snowfall amounts to the National Weather Service. Residents should slow down while traveling and prepare for prolonged winter conditions.
