Gaylord, Michigan – The coldest air of the winter season is expected to overspread northern Michigan, creating dangerous wind chills and travel concerns heading into next weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, another surge of Arctic air is forecast to arrive as early as Friday, with widespread bitter cold expected next Saturday. Forecasters say gusty winds Friday will combine with falling temperatures to produce subzero wind chills across the region.

The National Weather Service indicates the highest risk of extreme cold Saturday, when wind chills between −20 and −30 degrees are possible across parts of northern Michigan. Areas farther south, including lower elevations, may still experience wind chills between −10 and −20 degrees.

These conditions may create hazardous travel along Interstate 75, US-131, M-32, and rural roadways, especially overnight and during early morning hours. Gusty winds can reduce visibility in open areas, while extreme cold increases the risk of vehicle issues such as dead batteries and fuel line problems.

Officials urge residents to limit time outdoors, dress in layers, and cover exposed skin to reduce the risk of frostbite. Drivers are encouraged to keep emergency supplies in vehicles and allow extra travel time during the coldest periods.

Subzero wind chills are expected to persist into early Sunday before temperatures slowly moderate later in the day.

The National Weather Service emphasized that while snowfall is not the primary concern, cold exposure and wind-driven impacts pose the greatest risk this weekend.
