Gaylord, MI – Lake-effect snow showers will continue today through early Monday morning across northern Michigan, producing localized heavy accumulations, blowing snow, and periods of hazardous travel—especially north of the Mackinac Bridge.

According to the National Weather Service Gaylord, strong westerly flow over the relatively warm lakes is generating persistent lake-effect bands capable of producing 6 inches or more of snowfall in favored areas. Locations near Trout Lake, Whitefish Point, and parts of Chippewa and Mackinac counties could see the highest totals. Farther south into northern lower Michigan, amounts will be lighter, generally ranging from 1 to 3 inches, though brief heavier bursts are still possible.

Wind gusts between 25 and 40 mph will accompany the snow through tonight, contributing to blowing snow and quick drops in visibility. Forecasters warn that even areas receiving only light snowfall could experience sudden whiteout conditions as strong winds pick up loose snow across open stretches of roadway.

The heaviest snowfall is expected from late morning through this evening, tapering gradually after midnight but continuing in lighter form into early Monday. Lake-effect bands will shift frequently, meaning snowfall rates and visibility may change rapidly over short distances.

Drivers across I-75, M-123, and county roads near the Straits should be prepared for slick pavement and rapidly changing conditions. The NWS urges motorists to slow down, increase following distance, and avoid unnecessary travel during the most intense bands.

Temperatures will remain below normal through Monday, helping fresh snow accumulate readily on untreated surfaces. Conditions are expected to improve Monday afternoon as winds weaken and lake-effect activity diminishes.

Residents are encouraged to monitor evolving forecasts and use extra caution during the morning and evening travel periods.
